Beard, 47, a lifetime resident of the area, was recently diagnosed with leukemia and is undergoing treatment at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa.
Karen and her husband, Larry, have two sons and one grandchild. They live in Umatilla.
Proceeds from the poker tournament run will be used to help defray medical expenses, since insurance coverage has been depleted.
Cost to participate in the motorcycle texas holdem poker tournament run is $10 per hand, which includes lunch and a chance to win prizes. The top prizes to be awarded are a $500 value package, first place; a $250 package, second place; and $150 package for third place.
Among the poker run card stop sites are Gator Harley Davidson in Leesburg and Jeremiah's in Mount Dora. Following the poker run, music, food and entertainment are planned at Beard Pippin.

Widowed persons support Lasting Information for Enrichment, a social-support program for widowed people, will have a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Leesburg Community Center, 109 E. Dixie Ave.
A representative from Metro Crime Prevention of Florida will share guidelines on how to be safe at home, work and on the road. The cost of lunch is $9. Reservations: 352-787-0403. The Kiwanis Club of Mount Dora will honor teachers of the year from Christian Home and Bible School at a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Lakeside Inn, Mount Dora. Lawn bowling awards
The Mount Dora Lawn Bowling Club recently held its annual luncheon and awards ceremony, giving pins and certificates to many members for their achievements throughout the previous year. Cindy Cote was recipient of the Pill Bowler of the Year. New members are welcome to join the club. An open house is planned 6:30 p.m. June 7 at the clubhouse, 125 Edgerton Court, at the south end of Donnelly Street, followed by two weeks of free instruction at nighttime classes.

Benefit festival
A Greater Mount Dora Merchants Association is looking for vendors and church and civic groups to participate in the Blue Moon Festival from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday in the Golden Triangle area. The event will include activities, crafts, antiques, food, entertainment, a blueberry-recipe contest, a children's play area and bed races.
A carnival is planned, complete with games and rides, mostly geared toward children and teenagers. The association is working in conjunction with other groups to offer blocks of 12 tickets for $10, each ticket worth $1, to be used for games and rides for children.
The association's goal is to foster community unity and business awareness and offer a family-friendly venue.
